My interview with Jon, the School Resource Officer

Where did you go to school to become a police officer? How old were you when you decided to become a police officer?
I actually got my 4 year psychology degree at Kings University but didn’t know if I wanted to be a teacher or a Police officer. Then I went back and got my 2 year after degree in Education. I was planning on going into teaching when my buddy told me to apply for Camrose Police Service and I got in at the age of 28.

What does your day look like as a police officer?
Coffee and donuts all day….just kidding. Each day is very different. On patrol I go to calls and pull vehicles over, and work on investigating different files. I’m the School Resource Officer (SRO) right now, this involves teaching CORE, helping students, teachers, and parents, assisting with lockdowns, going to emergent calls, hanging out with kids.

Do you have a partner who you work with every day?
On patrol I had a team of 5, one seargent and 4 constables…but we just have one officer in each vehicle. In SRO I’m all by myself, but I have 4 other officers that help me teach CORE.

Do you have to make a note of every vehicle you stop and every call you respond to?

No, I don’t have to make a note of every vehicle stop and call I go to, however everything is saved on the radio, and computer so we keep track that way.

Do you have to go to every 911 call? How do they decide which call you have to go to?
If it’s a 911 call and I’m on patrol the whole team goes and we help each other out. As SRO I only go if they need extra help, or if it involves a school.

Are you still the D.A.R.E. officer?
We do not have DARE anymore, we have a new program called CORE. I am a CORE Officer, but my official role is the School Resource Officer and one of my duties is to teach CORE. I have been a School Resource Officer off and on for about 10 years. I have taught in the schools for 16 years, sometimes while on general patrol, and sometimes while I was the School Resource Officer.

Have you been a police officer anywhere else?
I have only been a Police officer in Camrose.

How long have you been a police officer?
I have been a Police officer for 18.5 years.

How long is your shift?
Patrol shifts are 12 hours long, 4 days on, 4 days off. School Resource Officers work Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up on the moon. Jk. I grew up about 45 minutes north of Edmonton. I did all my schooling in Edmonton.

Bonus answers:
No I haven’t shot anyone, yes it hurts to be tasered (pepper spray was worse), yes it’s fun to drive fast with the lights on, I’ve handcuffed lots of people, I wear a bullet proof vest all the time, my gear weighs about 30 pounds, and one of the craziest calls I went on involved a stolen truck backing into an empty Police car and getting stuck to it- then it took off pulling the police car which didn’t have a driver in it.

Extra bonus answer:

Yes, I would LOVE to taser Mrs.K……shhhhhhh.
